Jena Town Hall at the Market Square is the evidence of welfare of the medieval Jena. It was built in the middle of the XIV century. After some time a clock was set up on it. However, not the clock, but Snatching Hans (Schnapphans) was the main feature of the Town Hall. The Market Square itself is a small square. Its enclosed space is extremely comfortable. It is surrounded by colorful burgher houses on all four sides. The man on a pedestal in the center of the square is Elector Johann Friedrich the Magnanimous, who founded the local university.
