St. Johannes & St. Martin church was constructed in the Marktplatz of Schwabach in the 15th century. Its tall belfry with gilded clock dominates the marketplace. Inside the church there is the co-called Schwabach altar. It is 15 m tall and 6.5 m wide. Outstanding masters of German Renaissance worked on it – artists from the workshop of Michael Wolgemut whose disciple was Albrecht Dürer himself.
Besides the scrupulously painted scenes there are a lot of sculptures and decorative elements on the altar, majority of them are made from gold leaf. It is the magnificent gold work on the Schwabach altar that made it famous in the beginning of the 16th century. A beautiful colonnade also leaves an impression. Walls in the church are not painted because it is a protestant church. It was renovated in 2014, so it is in great state even though it counts 500 years!
