The Town Hall in the Market Square wasbuilt in the days when the town flourished, growing rich through the Hanseatictrade. It was built in 1462. Like many other historic buildings in Stendal, theTown Hall was built of red brick, although, one can only imagine this, asexternal walls of the Town Hall are covered with white plaster.
In theXVI century, a shopping arcade was built on to the Gothic Town Hall. Over time,the first floor of the building went under the ground and became a basement.Now it houses a banquet hall. Despite this, the town hall is functioning inStendal: the mayor and the town council still work here. It’s worth mentioningthat the doors of the Town Hall are open to tourists on the days free from thecouncil meetings. Among other elements of the interior should you pay attentionto the amazingly beautiful carved wooden wall in the Council Hall. This wall, completedin 1462, is coaeval with the Town Hall.
