In the Middle Ages Stendal was surroundedby a rampart, which has currently been preserved in remains. In particular, theUenglinger gate (Uenglinger Tor), built in the middle of the XV century. It isconsidered to be most beautiful brick gate in Germany along with the famousHolstentor gate. The Uenglinger gate is believed to have been built by thefamous architect of the XV century Stefan Boxthude.
Another heritage ofthe Middle Ages is the Tangermunde gate (Tangermunde Tor). It looks unusual dueto the fact that it was built at different times. The ground floor, designed inthe Romanesque style, was built in the early XIII century, and the top of redbrick was built on in 1440. The Powder Tower (Pulferturm) is the last of thesurvived defensive towers of the Stendal fortress. Now, when the rampart nomore exists, a squat brick tower stands alone on one of the town’s alleys.
