City park of Bochum in English style was laid out in 1876. You can take a pleasant walk along the paths by 19th century elegant villas. On the territory of the park there is a wonderful rose garden, as well as two lakes where in the warm season you can go boating. There is a large playground for children and a golf ground for those who like active recreation.
The park has an attraction – Bismarckturm. It is one of the 240 towers erected in honour of the first chancellor Otto von Bismarck in and outside Germany between 1869 and 1934. Construction of the Bochum tower started in 1908, and it was open two years later. Building of a 33-metres tall structure from Ruhr sandstone was financed through donation of citizens. In the 1920s an eternal flame was started on the top, later the bowl with it was brought down and placed to the right of the tower. Admission to Bismarckturm is free. In clear days you will find it rewarding to climb the stairs to the top to take great pictures of Bochum.
There is a small zoo with more than 3000 animals on the city park territory. One of the most popular shows is a huge sea water aquarium with tropical fish, starfish and two blacktip reef sharks.
