The main attraction of Quedlinburg isthe Quedlinburg Castle. It is a medieval fortified abbey fortress on the highhill of Schlossberg. The cloister was founded in 936 by the widow of King HenryI, Mathilda. During its almost 900-year-old history the abbey enjoyed anindisputable authority. It was considered one of the largest and most importantones in the Holy Roman Empire.
The realarchitectural and historical gem of the Quedlinburg castle ensemble is theRoman church of St. Servatius. This three-naved basilica was constructedbetween the 11th and the 12th centuries. Today it hostsnot only a concert hall and the burial vault of Henry I and Mathilda but alsothe largest treasury of church artifacts in Germany which includes a 9thcentury ivory reliquary of St. Servatius, a comb of Henry I with golden decorationand a 16th century manuscript Gospel.
In theCarpet Chamber you can see medieval handmade carpets, including a unique 1200knot carpet of 40 square meters. There are over 600 rarest exhibits in thetreasury: medieval manuscripts with valuable decoration, jewelry masterpieces,items from crystal, gold and ivory. A Renaissance castle is located next to thechurch, hosting a museum dedicated to the history of Quedlinburg abbey.
