As salt extraction took place right in the center of Lüneburg, many houses here sank and became deformed with time. However this house in Waagestrasse stands out. Its walls were built using plaster from the hill of Kalkberg which contains a large amount of calcium. In this case the builders were overzealous and fired the bricks too much. As a result they started to absorb and accumulate more moisture. It is due to this that the brickwork expands and gives the house a “pregnant” look. On the other hand, it gave birth to a new tradition in the town: newlyweds come to the house and touch the wall for a new member to appear soon in the family.
