Pilatus House is named so after the subject of the painting on its façade. It is considered to be the most beautiful one in Oberammergau. The scene of Pilatus judging Christ is painted on the house in 1784 by the author of Lüftlmalerei (air painting) technique Franz Zwink.
Until the end of the 19th century it was a common residential house and was even almost demolished due to plans of constructing a parking lot in its place. But Oberammergau residents stood up for the Pilatus House. Today it hosts an art and crafts centre where you can not only buy carved figures or ceramics by local craftsmen but also watch them work. There is also a museum of glass painting with a huge collection of stain-glass windows.
