Margraves Palace on the Market Square (Marktplatz) is the most beautiful building in Erlangen. It was built at the order of Frederick Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth at the beginning of the XVIII century, when all Europe was passionate about the baroque style. Virtually all German feudal lords built these architectural complexes at that time. But the palace in Erlangen turned out much more spectacular than many other similar buildings.
Originally the building was much larger than that the one, which survived to the present day. The reason is the terrible fire in 1814 at the palace, which was impossible extinguish: the water had frozen in the fire hoses because of cold winter it the street. Subsequently only part of the palace was recovered and was immediately passed to the university. There is a monument to the founder of the University of Erlangen and Nuremberg, Frederick of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, in front of the building at the square.
