Mannheim Palace isGermany's largest palace complex in the Baroque style. Its construction took 40years! Curiously, when the first stone was laid at the foundation of the palace(2 June 1720) the total construction cost was estimated at 300,000 guilders.But 2 million guilders - a fantastic sum for those times -were spent during 40years to build this architectural wonder!
The construction was completed in 1760, when Palatine Elector CarlTheodor already settled in the palace. The interiors of the palace amazedcontemporaries and still continue amazing with luxury. The palace served as theresidence of the feudal lords for a relatively short time. After the NapoleonicWars and the subsequent revision of the structure in Europe, the palace remainedownerless. For a while it was empty. Gradually part of its premises started tobe used as a museum.
In 1907, Mannheim University was located in the palace. Since then, MannheimPalace has been housing the main university building. The administration andthe main university library are located here.
Now during a tour of the palace you can admire the examples of theluxury palace - the Knights Hall, chapel, chic rests of Mannheim rulers, acollection of coins and paintings, beautiful furniture. You should explore thepalace church separately. This Catholic church of the Holy Trinity also strikeswith its splendor.
