It is the oldest and largest museum in the East Westphalia - Lippe. It was founded in 1835 as a museum of natural history. Now it accommodates an extensive collection of artifacts from different areas of natural sciences, the ancient world and the first settlements, the region's history, ethnology, culture, folklore, fine arts, crafts, etc. In addition to the permanent exhibitions the museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, workshops and festivals, attracting visitors of all ages. Ancient buildings included in the museum complex will also interest lovers of architecture. Two large half-timbered houses, built in the XVI century, in the 50s of the last century were moved to Detmold from the southern village of Lippe.
