Prominent German romanticist poet Heinrich Heine visited Lüneburg during his student years at the beginning of the 19th century. It is believed that it was here that he wrote his famous poem “Lorelei” about a river mermaid. The house where Heine had stayed was reconstructed. Original walls and ceilings with frescos of the 16th-19th centuries were restored. Today marriage registrations, concerts, readings and other events are conducted in the mansion. The office of the Literature Society and the town marketing department are based here.
