The first mention of Gruben street is found in historical chronicles in 1225. Craftsmen lived in it at that time. Many houses of the Late Gothic era were damaged during the floods, but were restored after the construction of the embankment in 1971. Now this area is famous for bars, hotels and souvenir shops. In 1999 Gruben became the world’s first street for jazz fame: bronze bas-reliefs in honor of legendary jazz musicians were built in the pavement here. Now 39 memorial panels with the names, signatures and dates of life of the International Jazz Week stars in Burghausen are established. Another picturesque old street, Messerzeile, runs parallel to Gruben: in the XV century smiths and artists lived in Messerzeile.
