The collection for the German Textile Museum in Krefeld began to emerge in the nineteenth century. Patrons and people from the art world, including sculptor Jacob Kraut from Mannheim participated in its creation and replenishment. It was his collection of fabrics that became the nucleus of the new museum. In 1981, the museum was granted a permanent permit to be located on Andreasmarkt Square.
About 30 thousand exhibits covering the period from the Middle Ages to the present day were placed in a specially built museum building. It has its own library, which stores 10 thousand books on fashion and textile production. The museum has an exhibition devoted to a particular period, country or topic- for example, textiles from the Central Asia, the medieval European costume, Japanese fashion of the nineteenth century, and so on. By the way, the museum is open only during exhibitions.
