The German Oceanographic Museum in Stralsund, consisting of three parts, is considered the most visited in northern Germany and one of the largest in the country. It has several departments.
For example, Ozeaneum is a huge aquarium where you can see fosterlings of Angela Merkel - Humboldt penguins, listen to whales communicating with each other, see a variety of underwater world of the Baltic, the North Sea and the Atlantic and the mess on their bottom. There are 30 aquariums there with 7000 sea creatures - sharks, fish, crabs, turtles, and in some rooms - extinct inhabitants of the Baltic Sea. It also has an instructive exposition devoted to human impact on the hydrosphere: storage of bottles, cans and other debris, which often occur at the bottom of the sea.
Another branch of the German Oceanographic Museum is located on the island of Dänholm. Nautineum tells about fishing and exploring the deep sea. It exhibits fishing boats and cutters, and reconstructed huts of fishing villages. There is also a laboratory about marine studies. Natureum on the peninsula of Darss is an open-air museum dedicated to the nature of the Baltic coastland and the local lighthouse with 160 years of history. There is an aquarium with Baltic fish and invertebrates, as well as an exhibition of stuffed sea birds in the museum.
