Dankwarderode Castle was built in the XII century to defend the city. In the XV century, the Dukes of Brunswick moved their residence to Wolfenbüttel and the castle was left to decay. Public protests in 1873 saved it from demolition and some time later it was restored according to the old drawings.
Today, the collection of medieval art from the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum is on display on the first floor of the castle. Here you can see the original statue of the Lion of Brunswick - the first major figure for the urban space to the north of the Alps, cast in bronze. Another permanent exhibition includes part of the treasures of the Welf dynasty preserved in the castle of the Middle Ages.
