This castle, built by Landgrave Henry II in the XIV century, was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. However, it was still habitable for several centuries after the war. A smithy and a pub were also built here. Pastors lived within the walls of the castle, and students - members of secret societies held their meetings. Famous poet and revolutionary Georg Büchner also lived in Badenburg and then issued the famous appeal to local farmers with the quatation "Peace to the huts! War on the palaces!", for which he was persecuted by the police. The ruins of the castle, where a restaurant was opened, are open to visitors.
