The history of Gladbach city began in the XIII century. The first part of its current name was added only in the XIX century. It indicates it was included in the County and then the Duchy of Berg.
Bergisch Gladbach is an industrial city: paper and food production is developed here. There is a paper museum in the former factory (Papiermuhle Alte Dombach). The other attractions include the church (Alte Katholische Pfarrkirche Refrath) of the same age as the city; a former seminary (Kardinal-Schulte-Haus) turned into a hotel; and the relatively young Town Hall (Rathaus), which looks like an old building. Bergisch Gladbach attracts tourists with hotels-quite a lot for such a small town- with a spa and well-developed infrastructure for aristocratic sports - horse riding and tennis, as well as the Christmas sales.
It’s impossible to advertise just one restaurant: it’s enough to have already mentioned it in the start. You should go to the aforementioned restaurant Vendome for a fine dinner in this city. Local dishes here are quite simple. They include the traditional for these places Westphalian ham (Westfälischer Schinken), Westphalian cheese (westfälischer Kräuterkäse) - fermented pottery grade, maturing between hop layers and Pumpernickel – whole-meal coarse-grained rye bread, very useful for digestion. The local roots vodka obtained through alcohol distillation of crops is a popular alcoholic beverage. Korn Kir cocktail is in great demand in the local bars: it is made from roots, to which black currant liqueur is added. Some restaurants offer fish soup with a base of roots or meat marinated in this vodka.
