The Vyborg Castle is the oldest fortress in Vyborg and one of the few surviving examples of military architecture in Russia that was typical for medieval Europe. There is an observation deck on the Tower of St. Olaf, at a height of more than 48 meters.
The Vyborg Castle was founded by Swedes in the late 13th century. The fortress was considered perhaps the most powerful in Scandinavia: the thickness of its walls exceeded meter and a half, and the walls of the high donjon, the Tower of St. Olaf, were four meters thick. The walls of the castle were made of granite, which was mined here in Vyborg, and the top of the Tower of St. Olaf was made of bricks. Russian troops tried to seize this fortress several times, but it remained unassailable until 1710. Despite the fact that the castle was strengthened a few times by then, the troops of Peter the Great managed to break down its resistance. Now the castle houses a museum. Here there is a commandant’s house with a local history exposition, a wine cellar where you can try on the suit of knight armor and fence, as well as casemates of the castle prison with a torture chamber. In summer the castle hosts the «Knight’s Castle» Military-Historical Festival, with medieval theatrical performances, archery competitions, knight tournaments among historical reenactors, folk music concerts with medieval dances, a fair and lectures on history.
