In 2014 Volgograd Planetarium marked its 60-year anniversary. Despite its age, it was and remains one of Russia's most interesting museums on astronomical subjects. The luxuriously decorated building in the Empire style was a gift of the GDR workers on Joseph Stalin’s 70th anniversary.
The planetarium building is like a temple: the similarity is strengthened by the round dome, which is typical of the planetarium, crowned with the sculpture “Peace”. It was specially created for the planetarium by famous Soviet sculptor Vera Mukhina, who designed the building to symbolize reconciliation between peoples. This idea perfectly fit into the city ensemble, as the Planetarium is at the end of the wide and beautiful Peace Street. The Planetarium is superbly equipped; it has excursions dedicated to the starry sky and researchers work in it.
