The State Tretyakov Gallery was founded by merchant Pavel Tretyakov in 1856. This art museum has one of the world’s richest collections of Russian painting. Today the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery numbers more than 100 thousand works of art and covers a huge period from the 11th to the 21st century.
Exhibition halls and museum funds of the Tretyakov Gallery are located in several Moscow buildings, including the ancient church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachi. The exhibition of Russian painting of the XIX century is the most complete in the gallery. These are the works of Vasnetsov, Shishkin, Polenov, Perov, Repin, Surikov and Kramskoi. The beginning of the XX century is represented by the masterpieces of Levitan, Vrubel, Roerich and Serov. Here you can also find the icons by Andrei Rublev, sculptures by Rastrelli and much more.
