A fortress wall with 10 towers was built in Vyborg in the 15th century. The Town Hall tower was attached a particular significance: it ran out of the wall, which enabled to guard against attacks more effectively and fire from the flanks. This tower was used as an important element of defense for more than 200 years. Today it performs a peaceful function: there will be an exhibition hall after the restoration.
The original height of the tower was over 12 meters, and it had gates and firing ports. Almost 2 m thick fortress walls adjoined the tower, and their fragments have survived to this day. The tower was rebuilt several times: its top storey was destroyed in fire in the late XVIII century and was not restored, and the roof in its present form appeared in the twentieth century. The Town Hall Tower is called so because it once belonged to the city authorities, housed in the Town Hall. It also performed a religious function: it served as a bell tower of the ex Lutheran church.
