The historical and cultural and natural Tomskaya Pisanitsa Museum Preserve is a unique natural and archaeological museum-reserve. A sanctuary of ancient tribes inhabiting Siberia was found on the banks of the Tom River. The age of the sanctuary is estimated at 6 thousand years. By the decree of Tsar Peter the Great in 1719 an expedition was sent here to study the finds on the terrain. Ancient petroglyphs, drawings and inscriptions on stones have been named «pisanye» («painted») — hence the name Pisanitsa. On the rocks near the bank of the Tom River one can see hunting drawings, solar symbols and everyday scenes.
Now in the Tomskaya Pisanitsa Museum Preserve there are several museums, a zoo, an ethnographic farmstead «Shorski ulus Kesek» (the Shors are a small people of Siberia). In the estate it is worth to look at the dwelling of the Shors of the XIX — XX centuries: yurts chopped from a tree. There is a Museum of Asian Rock Art, an Orthodox chapel and a pagan temple of the ancient Slavs in the museum preserve. Temporary exhibitions are organized in the preserve all year round, and people’s holidays are celebrated here. Every year hundreds of tourists come here for Christmas or Maslenitsa (carnival). The holiday Ivan Kupala Day in June and «Chazhyl-Pazhy» — celebration of New Year in March, are particularly popular.
