Tikhvin Assumption Monastery was founded in 1560 by the decree of Tsar Ivan the Terrible in place of the appearance of the icon of the Mother of God Hodegetria, which was named Tikhvinskaya. He considered this icon to be his patroness. This miraculous image of the Virgin in general has always been particularly venerated in Russia both among the people and among the Russian tsars. The first king of the Romanovs dynasty Mikhail Romanov was blessed to reigning with a copy of the Tikhvin icon of the Mother of God. In 1941 fascist troops seized the Orthodox shrine and took it to the Baltic states. After the war it was sent to the United States. Only in 2004 the legendary icon returned to Tikhvin!
Today the famous icon is in the Assumption Cathedral, the most significant and ancient construction of the Tikhvin Monastery. It is a snow-white temple with five domes, at the corners of which four side-chapels of red color are attached. There are also the Intercession Church with a refectory, cell buildings and a belfry, built in the XVI-XVII centuries on the territory of the monastery. One can also see the majestic church with a red facade — the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and a small Church of Tikhvin Icon of Our Lady named «Krylechko». It received this name because it is located in the tower above the main gate of the monastery. After the Great Patriotic War this church was the only one operating in the district.
It is worthwhile to rise at the monastery bell tower to admire the bells and see the monastery from a bird’s eye view. One of the expositions of the Tikhvin Memorial Museum of History, Architecture and Art is also located on the bell tower. The ponds Tabory are located near the monastery. They were called so because earlier the enemy’s army stood on this swampy terrain as a tabor (gypsy camp). Today a quiet life is flowing here: locals like to fish in summer on the algae-laden ponds.
