The Theotokos-Christmas Monastery was founded in Vladimir by Prince Vsevolod the Big Nest and Bishop John in 1191. Till the 14th century the white-stone Theotokos-Christmas Cathedral was the cathedral of the metropolitans, and the monastery itself was the main cathedral in Russia till 1561. The Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky, who died on his way back from the Horde, was buried in the monastery church in 1263. In 1723 the relics of Alexander Nevsky were transferred to St. Petersburg.
In 1858 Emperor Alexander II visited the Theotokos-Christmas Monastery and left an order for the restoration of the pre-Mongolian church, but it was broken and a new Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built. In 1918 the monastery was closed. The Nativity Cathedral and the bell tower were destroyed in 1930. The monastery was reborn in 1992. In 2004 a new Christmas Cathedral was consecrated, completely different from the previous one. Two years later, the bell tower was rebuilt. Peace and quiet reign on the territory of the monastery. According to the visitors, the monks themselves are happy to tell about the history of this place, if they are asked.
