The White Mosque of Astrakhan was first mentioned in the academic scientific work of 1777. According to scientists, the oldest wooden mosque was located where a stone building was erected 207 years ago at the expense of the Tatar merchant David Izmailov. This building has survived to this day. Now the oldest city mosque is open to believers and tourists. The Islamic Hajji Tarkhan Institute functions under the mosque.
The White Mosque survived hard times: it was rebuilt more than once in the twentieth century. Believers started to attend the mosque only in the early 1990s. The restoration work began a few years later, and now the guests of the city can admire the fabulously beautiful blue-white building and the slender minaret rising to the sky. People of any religion can attend the mosque. It is worth a visit to appreciate its harmonious inner decoration and feel the atmosphere of tranquility and peace.
