The Volga River divides Tutaev into two parts: on the right bank there is Borisoglebskaya Sloboda, on the left — Romanovskaya. The Romanov Side is rich in old merchant houses and churches, most of which have preserved their original appearance. Since the time of the founder Prince Roman Vladimirovich there have been only the shafts of the old Kremlin, which defended the settlement from the enemies. On the fortified territory of the Romanov Side there is the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Cross erected at the end of the 17th century.
The Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Cross is not as lucky as Resurrection Cathedral on the opposite bank. In the 30s of the last century it was closed, placing in it an anti-religious museum of local lore, and after World War II — a timber warehouse. In 1992 the cathedral was returned to the Orthodox church. Regular services are held in the winter temple. Crowned with five silver domes, the temple on three sides is surrounded by porch-galleries. Restoration works are underway inside the temple: the front chapel is whitewashed, but in the old part of the cathedral vivid frescoes, including scenes from the apocalypse, were preserved.
