The Assumption Cathedral of the Holy Assumption Monastery in Ivanovo is the only one of the large churches that survived in Russia during the Soviet era. Therefore, it became the center for the revival of Orthodoxy in the region in the 1990s. The first wooden church in this place was built in 1815. And already in 1834 a stone temple was erected with the money of the Ivanovo factory owners. It was consecrated in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin.
The Assumption Cathedral had wealthy patrons who did not skimp on decorating the temple. It is known that the icons of the large iconostasis had silver casings. In 1922 in the process of confiscation of the church values 288 kilograms of silver were confiscated from the Assumption Cathedral alone! At the end of the XIX century the temple was fully painted for personal funds of the church elder, the Ivanovo factory owner Nikolai Shchapov. In the 20s of the twentieth century the church was closed, the surrounding area was devastated. Only in 1995 the church was returned to the faithful and the Holy Assumption Monastery was established. For 20 years facilities for monks and a the new Church of Nicholas and Alexandra, the royal passion bearers, were built. The family of the last Russian emperor is especially revered in the monastery. There are plans to create a museum for the memory of Tsar Nicholas II and his family. Now the Assumption Cathedral is the cathedral of Ivanovo. And the Holy Assumption Monastery accepts novices: anyone can settle in a monastery, help monks arrange the monastery and work.
