The one-headed Church of the Intercession on the Nerl near the village of Bogolyubovo, 12 km far from Vladimir, was built in the 12th century on an artificial hill that turns into an island during a flood. According to the chronicles, Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky erected a church in memory of his son Izyaslav, who fell in the campaign against the Volga Bulgarians. Prince Andrey became the ancestor of the tradition of celebrating the Feast of the Intercession of the Virgin. The Church on the Nerl is the first Russian Church of the Intercession. Its white stone façade is adorned with figures of the Old Testament King David, fantastic animals and female faces.
Originally, the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl was part of a small monastery. In 1764 the monastery was closed, and the church was almost disassembled. In the XIX century the frescoes of the temple were completely lost. But in 1919 the Soviet government recognized the church as an art monument and the repairing work began. In 1937 it was decided to turn the church into a museum. In the 1950s the building was restored. Now the church is part of the museum complex. Festive services are held in the church.
