The history of the Bolshoi Theatre, one of the largest theaters of opera and ballet in the world, began in 1776. However, the historical building with the famous quadrangle of Apollo by sculptor Peter Klodt was opened only 80 years later. Today the Bolshoi Theatre is one of the five most famous theaters of the planet.
The greatest artists, in particular, Feodor Chaliapin, Galina Ulanova, Maya Plisetskaya and Ekaterina Maksimova performed on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre in different years. From 2005 to 2011 the Bolshoi Theatre underwent major reconstruction. During this time the historical appearance of the building was restored, acoustics was improved and the orchestra pit expanded: now it accommodates more than 130 musicians and is recognized as one of the largest orchestra pits in the world.
