Teatralnaya Street in Kaluga is a pedestrian way surrounded by architectural monuments, cafes, shops, sights and exhibitions of local artists. The street is so named because of the two theaters located there – the Drama Theatre and the Theatre for Young Spectators.
Before the large-scale reconstruction in 2009, Teatralnaya Street had a completely different reputation. In the XVIII century it housed many taverns where people came to drink and have a snack and where scuffles and robberies often happened between the visitors. So the street was ill famed. However, everything was gradually changing. In 2009, the street was arranged well and made pedestrian. Here there is the Kaluga "Kilometre Zero". During installation, the restored fragments of the XIX century pavement were laid out around it. Another remarkable thing is a sculptural composition "Dreams of the Sky". It is a monument to the Kaluga scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky who is depicted standing with a bicycle and looking dreamily at the sky. You can get on the great inventor’s bicycle and even spin the pedals.
