Teatralnaya Square in Vyborg is an element of a «cascade» of three squares: Teatralnaya, Cathedral and Market, located on the same diagonal. Its architectural dominant is the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, the only Lutheran church in Vyborg. Under Emperor Paul I, the square was used as a parade ground and was therefore called the Parade Square. Tennis, gorodki (a game similar to skittles) and other sports competitions were held here in the late XIX century. In the second half of the 20th century there appeared carousels, a fountain and an outdoor cinema on the square that has already become Pionerskaya.
The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is still the dominant of Teatralnaya Square. Next to it there stands a monument to Mikael Agricola, a Finnish enlightener, and in front of the cathedral there is a fountain with a bear statue, which used to adorn the station building in pre-war times. Teatralnaya Square can also be considered a Vyborg version of Hollywood. In front of the square there is a Walk of Actor’s Fame, where, in addition to Russian filmmakers, the Polish film director Krzysztof Zanussi and the French actor Gerard Depardieu are mentioned, since they had also contributed to the development of cinematography in Russia. Across the road from the alley there is the Vyborg Palace Cinema, which annually hosts the «Window to Europe» Film Festival.
