Tatarskaya Sloboda is a historical district in the center of Tomsk, which includes Tatarskaya, Istochnaya, Belinskogo and Kuznetsova streets. There is a house with a hipped roof on Kuznetsova Street. During the first 300 years Tomsk was built of wood — the most affordable material in Siberia. And in the quarter, limited by these streets, a unique architectural style — «Tomsk lace» was formed. The whole «wooden» streets built up with unique houses of beauty have been preserved. 200 out of 1,800 survived houses are recognized today as monuments of wooden architecture!
In the Tatarskaya Sloboda there are also houses of the XVIII century miraculously escaped in fires. One can see beautiful wooden houses built in the early twentieth century, when wealthy people competed in the beauty and originality of their mansions. A real «wooden modern» was born in Tomsk that time.Next to the Tatarskaya Sloboda is the Museum of Wooden Architecture, which was opened in 2009. It is housed in an Art Nouveau mansion of 1910. Its exposition tells about wooden construction in Tomsk. A collection of carved platbands and other elements decorating wooden houses are presented. The museum also organizes tours through the streets of Tomsk where one can find interesting details about the amazing «Tomsk lace».
