A one-arched Stone Bridge across the Zolotukha River, built in Vologda in 1791, connected the Nizhny (Lower) Posad with the historic center of the city. From the south and north the bridge was framed by four round three-story towers. There were stalls along the bridge from tower to tower, where fish and wine were sold. Today it is the shortest and the only pedestrian street in ancient Vologda.
In the 1820s the Stone Bridge ensemble was supplemented by covered shopping arcades. At the beginning of the XX century the hotels "Hermitage" and "Passage" were built on the site of the southern towers. Now the building of the "Hermitage" of 1904 with additional buildings of the 1950s is occupied by the Vologda administration. The building of the "Passage" is under reconstruction. In 1936, the Stone Bridge was asphalted. Today, street musicians like to perform on the bridge.
