The Ivanovo State Museum of History and Local Lore named after D.G. Burylin was founded in 1912. It began with a collection of art objects of the "cotton print king" Burylin. The philanthropist's grandfather Diodor Burylin started collecting art items in the middle of the XIX century. In 1885 the collection had more than 100 thousand items: orders, medals, weapons, books and works of art. Later, archaeological finds from the vicinity of Ivanovo were also added to this. Part of the collections of the Burylins was exhibited in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod and even in Chicago!
In 1919 the Museum of History and Local Lore was nationalized. Now in the halls of the museum one can see a unique collection of the Ivanovo cotton prints specially selected for the All-Russian Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod in 1896. In addition, there are collections of old documents, weapons, Russian folk crafts, paintings and sculptures.
