Speransky Square had already borne the name of Count Speransky, former Governor-General of Siberia, from 1886 to the October Revolution. Having survived two more renaming, including Kirov Square, it regained its old name in 2016. The square has changed its name 12 times over its more than 300 years history!
Speransky Square is one of the oldest in the city: it is over 300 years old! It appeared in 1670, almost immediately after the construction of the Irkutsk Kremlin. Called Kremlyovskaya, the square has become the main place of trade and fairs. At the beginning of the XIX century, there was a skating-rink here, as well as a guest house and a number of other buildings. After the Revolution of 1917, several buildings were demolished and the square got the name of Kirov, just as the park with benches and fountains laid out here in the 1960s. In 2016 the site of this square with the traffic artery was again renamed the Count Speransky Square. However, the park still bears the name of Kirov.
