The memorial complex of the launch vehicle "Soyuz" is the only European carrier rocket assembled and installed vertically. It appeared in Samara in 2001 on the occasion of the anniversary of the world’s first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s flight. This rocket was produced at the local "Progress" plant (Progress Rocket Space Center) in 1984 and became a training model for the Plesetsk Cosmodrome. Fifteen years later it reached the end of its service life and was given to the plant.
The memorial complex of the launch vehicle "Soyuz" in Samara has become the fifth monument to the rocket R-7: the first one appeared in Moscow at VDNKh (Exhibition of Economic Achievements) in 1969, and there are more recent monuments in Korolev, Kaluga and Baikonur. All the equipment was removed from the real rocket and it was repainted it white and orange. Six years later, in 2007, a "Cosmic Samara" Museum was opened next to the monument. Its building has become a pedestal for the rocket. Together they form a 55-meter-high structure.
