Convent of St. Ambrose and Our Lady of Kazan (Shamordino Convent)

The Convent of St. Ambrose and Our Lady of Kazan (Shamordino Convent) is a nunnery which was founded by a man. It was organized in the late XIX century by the Elder Ambrose from another Kaluga monastery, the Optina Pustyn. Under the will of his goddaughter, he arranged the convent in the estate of Shamordino that belonged to her.
All the arrangements in the Shamordino Convent, up to the cells construction site, were determined by Elder Ambrose. And almost all the buildings of the monastery: the Kazan Cathedral, the almshouse with a chapel and utility rooms were erected at the expense of Moscow merchant Perlov. All these buildings have survived to our days, although the monastery came to desolation during the first years of Soviet power. The monastic life revived here in 1990: the chapel was consecrated again and the cathedral was rebuilt. About one hundred novices currently live here. Pilgrims visit this place for the holy sources, the water of which is believed to cure eye disease, and ablutions strengthen the body and spirit.
