The white-stone cathedral in honor of Saint George the Victorious was built in Yuryev-Polsky in the first half of the 13th century. It is a unique example of Russian architecture, by analogy with which many famous churches of Russia were created, including the Assumption Cathedral — the first stone church in Moscow.
Saint George Cathedral was rebuilt and restored several times. Because of the constant alterations on the stone bas-reliefs, you can notice some randomness on the outer walls. During the restoration, the masters often lacked material, and therefore they used old carved stones. Previously, on the walls of the cathedral there were depictions of whole biblical stories: now only fragments of them have remained. But today it will greatly interest to observe and collect lions, angels, birds, saints and demons into a single whole. You can look at the walls of the cathedral endlessly! In addition, according to the local legend, the one who is able to find a bas-relief in the form of an elephant on the wall of the cathedral on his/her own can make a wish, and it will surely come true. The dilapidated brick building of the Trinity Cathedral is near Saint George Cathedral. Once it was the end of the temple, overgrown and singled out by the authorities to be built into a separate church. However, under Soviet power, the Trinity Cathedral was destroyed, and now no divine services are given here.
