Recreational Gorky Park in Perm is the oldest in the city. There is a stele at the entrance, topped with a two-headed eagle. This monument appeared in 1824, when Emperor Alexander I of Russia graced Perm with his visit. A picturesque birch grove, which later turned into an exquisite park, was on the edge of the city at that time, and a festive stele was supposed to symbolize the city limit. A beautiful rotunda was also installed in the park by the arrival of the Emperor, and it later became one of the symbols of Perm.
Besides Alexander I, Anton Chekhov, Alexander von Humboldt, Prince Mikhail Romanov and other distinguished guests were also strolling along the park at various times. Gorky Park was a recreation center of the city people from the very beginning of its history. Now there are amusement rides and cinemas, kiosks and open-air concert venues here. The local panoramic wheel is considered to be the largest in Perm: it offers wonderful views of the city and the Kama River. Three years ago, the park was supplemented with a 3D-Oceanarium, enabling to have a virtual look at the prehistoric fish which once inhabited the world's oceans and seas.
