Ratushnaya Square is the oldest and legendary square in Vyborg. In the Middle Ages, the Vyborg Castle and the Town Hall were connected by an underground passage, partially running under the square. As the urban legend has it, some paranormal phenomena were observed in this secret passage, up to the appearance of ghosts, as well as mysterious letters were found. However, you cannot see it firsthand and verify the legend, since the passage was filled up in the 1930s.
Ratushnaya Square has changed several names: it was the Main Square, the Town Square, the Fortress Square and Torkel Knutsson Square — in honor of the town’s founder. The bronze statue of Knuttson stands in the center of the square, with its back to the Town Hall building. The Town Hall itself is a Hanseatic-style building erected in the late nineteenth century. In the twentieth century it was used as a museum, where the only mummy in Vyborg was even kept. The Town Hall sustained great damage in World War II, and it was impossible to completely restore its original appearance.Adjacent to the square is Krepostnaya Street, where you can see two allegorical monuments. A woman’s figure with a gear and hammer in her hands embodies the industry, and a statue of Mercury holding an anchor and a winged staff depicts the sea trade.
