Petrovskaya Square and a monument to the first Russian Emperor Peter the Great are located in the territory of Annenkrone (Annenskiye fortifications). However, it would be more logical to name this area by the name of Peter because of the high concentration of objects with the same name: Petrovskaya Hill, Petrovskaya Street, Petrovskaya Embankment and Petrovsky Park.
Petrovskaya Square is very contrasting: new granite benches and lanterns are found here side by side with the old barracks and a slightly dilapidated house of General Mendt. A monument to Fyodor Apraksin, a military leader and associate of Peter the Great, stands on the square. It was Apraksin who led the Russian army in 1710, when Vyborg was captured. Together with the monuments of Peter the Great and the founder of the town Torkel Knuttson, this complex forms a semantic triad: these are the military leaders who played an important role in the history of Vyborg.Petrovskaya Hill is a hill where the command post of Russian troops was located during the siege of Vyborg in the XVIII century. Here, there is a monument to Emperor Peter the Great, thanks to whom Vyborg became a Russian town. The path towards it is paved with cobblestone, with wide stairs — to match Peter, who was very tall.
