The Peter’s Park of Arkhangelsk features the Monument to Emperor Peter the Great. Everyone saw it, even those who have never been in this city but simply held a 500-ruble Russian banknote in their arms. This is the bronze figure of Peter the Great wearing a cocked hat and officer’s uniform and resting on a cane. The monument was cast in Paris in 1909 according to the model of sculptor M.M. Antokolsky, and the pedestal was cut out of granite by monks of the Solovetsky Monastery. The monument was unveiled in 1914 in celebration of the 200th anniversary of victory over the Swedes.
Part of the Peter’s Park is occupied by the Arkhangelsk M.V. Lomonosov Regional Drama Theater. The modern building of the theater was opened in 1932 on the site where the Holy Trinity Cathedral stood until 1929. In 1961 the theater was named after the great Russian scientist M.V. Lomonosov on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of his birth. In 2009 the theater was restored and a memorial stone was erected at the spot where the altar of the cathedral was.
