Peter the Great House-Museum is the oldest museum in Vologda. The emperor, who visited Vologda several times from 1692 to 1724, stayed in a one-story building of the XVII century. The stone house was built by the Dutch merchant John Gutmann.
Dutch furnaces with original tiles have been preserved inside the house-museum. The coat of arms above the front door is indicative of the foreign origin of the mansion. In 1872 the state acquired this significant historical building. Peter the Great House-Museum was opened in it in 1885 at the initiative of local nobles. The exposition contains the caftan and waistcoat of Peter, his plaster death mask, the cup of his associate Menshikov and the firearm of those times.
