The Peter and Paul Church is one of the oldest in Smolensk. It was built in 1146 and ranks among the three preserved pre-Mongolian temples of the city. Throughout its more than 800-year history the cathedral was repeatedly destroyed, served as a church and was plundered during the Patriotic War of 1812 and World War II. The appearance of the ancient church was carefully restored in the 60s.
The Peter and Paul Church, reconstructed with a thin burnt plinthiform brick which was used by ancient Russian architects, looks very authentic today. The interior of the temple looks quite modest, however, it only emphasizes the age of this ancient Russian church.
