Nikolo-Shartomsky Monastery is one of the oldest in Russia. It was founded in the XIII century on the site of the appearance of the miraculous icon, 20 kilometers far from Ivanovo, on the bank of the small river Shartoma. According to a legend, it was in this place that the miraculous icon of St. Nicholas appeared in front of a peasant woman. It is assumed that this icon started working wonders, but no written evidence of this has survived.
The first written mention of the Nikolo-Shartomsky Monastery dates back to 1425. Even then the monastery was rich and famous. XVII century "presented" a heavenly patron to the monastery. It is known that Joachim Shartomsky came to the monastery from Rostov the Great. Judging from the manner of painting, he learned the art of the icon painting from the Greek masters. His painting differed much from the traditional Ivanovo icon painting. All the icons that Joachim painted for the Shartomsky Monastery and other customers were recognized as miraculous. Only two of his works have survived up to now - in Suzdal (the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery) and in Vyazniki. The monastery itself was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1649. After that the remains of the monastery were moved from the bank of the small river Shartoma closer to the Molokhta River. Now the temples of the XVII-XIX centuries rise on the territory of the monastery: St. Nicholas Cathedral in Byzantine style built in 1651, the winter Kazanskaya church, St.Gregory Bishop of Agrigentum church, painted by Palekh masters in the XXI century. More than 100 people live in the monastery constantly. The monks have a smithy, a bakery, an apiary, a cowshed and a vegetable garden. Bells are founded here in the local workshop.
