Vologodskaya Oblast Architecture and Ethnography Museum «Semenkovo» was founded in 1979 based on the results of the expeditions in 1979 - 1990 in the Sukhonsky District of the Vologda Region. This region was home to the most ancient settlements that were influenced by Veliky Novgorod. Nine residential buildings and eight household buildings were transferred here by 1995.
Now the Architecture and Ethnography Museum «Semenkovo» is a village of 16 yards, the tent-shaped St. George Church of the late 17th century and the Chapel of Elijah the Prophet. The village is surrounded by a sown field, granaries, windmills of different types, ice storage rooms and "black" baths. There are shopping stalls and a carousel here for tourists. During the tour of the museum you can learn about the secrets of northern construction, the life and world view of the peasants of the Russian North, hunting and fishing, secrets of the Vologda butter and the technology of butter factories. The museum hosts theatrical performances themed on the fairy tales and events from the life of the village. It is also a venue for the folk and Orthodox holidays which are celebrated according to ancient traditions. Moreover, the museum arranges master classes, where one can learn painting on wood, making patchwork amulet dolls, bast shoes and utensils from birch bark, creating wooden toys and embroidering. Here people like to play lapta in the warm season.
