Voskresenskaya Mountain is the place where Tomsk was founded. The Tomsk fortress appeared on its top in 1604. Now it leads to two streets — Bakunina Street and Oktyabrsky vzvoz. The ancient paving stone has been still preserved at the Bakunina Street. From the Bakunina Street it is possible to walk to the first Polish church in Siberia. Lutheran Church of Blessed Virgin Mary was erected in 1833 for the Poles, exiled to the Tomsk province after the Polish Uprising of 1830. Bakunina Street was reconstructed as part of the Museum of History of Tomsk.
The Museum of History of Tomsk was opened by the 400th anniversary of the city. That time the wooden buildings of the Tomsk fortress — the stockade and Spasskaya Tower again appeared on the Voskresenskaya Mountain. On the birthday of Tomsk a cannon shot near the fortress. Since then it shoots once a week on Fridays at 12.00.
A wooden tower stands on the roof of the museum, from where they watched the fires in the city in ancient times. The «eternal duty» — a fireman’s mannequin is installed there in memory of the people who saved the city from fires. From the observation platform of the museum one can see Tomsk from a height. The museum’s logo Dinotherium is interesting. During the excavations on the Voskresenskaya Mountain archeologists found tiles with the image of a mythical creature — Dinotherium. It combines the features of a horse, a lion and an eagle. It can also spew fire and several times «saved» Tomsk from the raids of nomadic neighbors.
