Moscow Zoo, founded in 1864, is the largest and oldest in Russia. Today it contains over eight thousand animals belonging to 1,100 species of the world fauna. The zoo is located in the center of the city and consists of two parts connected by a pedestrian bridge. In each zone there are several ponds for the swimming birds. More than four million visitors visit the Moscow Zoo every year.
In summer they come here even at night to visit the most interesting excursion with lanterns and see the animals after sunset. And in winter a similar tour "Night World" is held on a specially constructed underground tunnel where glass enclosures contain animals that lead an exceptionally nocturnal lifestyle. In the Moscow Zoo there is also a contact zoo where one can pet donkeys, ponies, rabbits and other harmless little animals. In addition, the zoo has its own museum which tells not only its history, but also tells about the recent restoration as well as exhibit a large collection of historical posters.
