Monument to M.V. Lomonosov, an outstanding Russian scientist, is the first in Russia and the first in Arkhangelsk. The project of the famous sculptor Ivan Martos was approved by Emperor Alexander I, and the place where the monument was erected had been chosen personally by Emperor Nicholas I. The monument was unveiled in 1832. Since then, it has changed its location several times. Now the monument stands in front of the building of the Northern (Arctic) Federal University.
The monument to M.V. Lomonosov depicts the scientist as an ancient poet: he is dressed in a toga, stands on the hemisphere and holds a lyre in his arm, given by an angel. The Northern (Arctic) University appeared in 2010 as an association of several higher educational institutions of the city, including the Arkhangelsk State Technical University. Its students study in such unique areas as Arctic biodiversity, shipbuilding and ocean engineering, expertise in wooden buildings and many others.
